Our Neighbourhood

Our neighbourhood has been a centre of growth and change throughout its history, and is positioned as a crossroads for the movement of people, goods and traffic throughout HRM.

As an example, in the 1940s, new housing was badly needed for an expansion in the population.  In response, the city acquired land that had been an airport and created the area now known as Westmount, with modest houses offered to WWII veterans.

More recently, the neighbourhood has welcomed:

  • newcomers

  • seniors

  • immigrant families

  • university students

  • and more

We are home-owners, tenants, people working from home, students, commuters, walkers, cyclists, parents and kids.

All looking to live near grocery stores, schools, public transit, retail shops and services.

Our neighbourhood is like many in Halifax:

  • A well-established neighbourhood with many blocks of tree-lined residential streets.

  • It can best be characterized as a mixture of duplexes, triplexes, low rise apartments, single family homes, and seniors’ housing as well as churches, schools, playgrounds, day care centres, professional offices and businesses. Please visit our photo gallery, below.

  • It is a stable, diverse and inclusive population of all ages and income levels, including renters, owners and business owners.

  • Much of the rental property inventory is affordable for low and middle income people.

  • A new 22 story building, has affected sun and shade in the neighbourhood; it has also created a wind tunnel that make it challenging for pedestrians to traverse the affected streets.

Our neighbourhood is really a collection of neighbourhoods that surround the proposed West End Mumford redevelopment project.
